Human beings have been using psychedelic substances for ten thousand years. They emerged in modern western awareness in 1943 when Albert Hoffman first discovered the effects of LSD. This discovery allowed the psychedelic experience to travel places where psychedelics did not exist in the local fauna. In 1957, Gordon Wasson published an article in Life Magazine on “The Magic Mushrooms of Mexico”. This ushered in an age of adventure consciousness travel that still exists today as people head off to the Amazon in search of local enlightenment practices. These two modalities, one scientific, the other a folk practice, still flow in parallel tributaries to one another into the modern psychedelic experience.
As soon as psychedelics were discovered, they were put to use by Psychiatrists to address the ills of the modern age. They were used successfully in treating addictions, depression, anxiety and compulsions of all kinds. By the time they became democratized by recreation use in the 1960, psychedelics had two decades of success in clinical settings in Europe and North America. Once they moved into the general population, their impact was enormous. However, recreational use also created many difficulties in people who were unprepared for the profound impact of these substances and those who took them in sub-optimal conditions.
Currently a psychedelic renaissance is occurring that combines the clinical success of the 1950’s and 60’s with the folk medicine traditions which go back thousands of years. People are hungry for the life changing perspectives and experiences that these substances provide. But people should be wary of being exploited or being provided this powerful substances by irresponsible providers who are unable to be of assistance during challenging experiences , which if handled dexterously, bear life changing fruit.
